How do you measure a room for flooring?
It depends on the shape of the room, but here is a quick breakdown of how to calculate the area for the most common room layouts.
How to measure rectangular rooms
- Measure the length of the room.
- Measure the width of the room.
- Multiply the two numbers (Length x Width).
- Add an extra 5% for wastage.
How to measure L-shaped rooms
- Split the room into two rectangular sections.
- Work out the area (Length x Width) of both sections individually.
- Add the two totals together.
- Add an extra 5% for wastage.
Rectangular Rooms: All you need to do is measure the length, then the width, and multiply them together!
Example: 4m (Length) x 8m (Width) = 32m². You will need 32 square metres of flooring.
L-Shaped Rooms: Split the room into two rectangles. Find the area of each, then add them together.
Example: (4m x 8m = 32) + (5m x 5m = 25). Total area = 57m².
