How to Measure a Room for Flooring (Step-by-Step Guide)
Before ordering new flooring, accurate room measurements are essential. Whether you’re planning for laminate, LVT, or engineered wood, getting the maths right means no wasted money and no last-minute shortages. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to measuring your room.
H2: What You’ll Need
- A tape measure (ideally 5m+).
- Pen, paper, and calculator (or your phone).
- A helper (for larger rooms).
H2: Step 1 – Sketch Your Room
Draw a rough outline of your room. Don’t worry about perfect accuracy — this is just to help you keep track of measurements.
H2: Step 2 – Measure the Length and Width
Measure the longest wall for length and the widest point for width. Always measure at least twice to confirm accuracy.
👉 Example: If your room is 5.2m long and 3.8m wide, multiply:
5.2 × 3.8 = 19.76m²
H2: Step 3 – Account for Irregular Shapes
For L-shaped or irregular rooms, break them into smaller rectangles or squares. Measure each section separately, then add them together.
H2: Step 4 – Add Extra for Waste
Always add 5–10% extra to cover cutting and mistakes. For herringbone, chevron, or diagonal layouts, increase to 10–12%.
H2: Step 5 – Check Pack Coverage
Flooring is sold in packs (e.g., one pack covers 2.2m²). Divide your total area by the pack coverage to know how many packs you’ll need.
👉 Example: 19.76m² ÷ 2.2m² = 9 packs required (round up).
